Trick-or-Treating with Pets in the CT Shoreline: Pros & Cons

October 15, 2025
By: Adriana Valle

Halloween is approaching fast, costumes are ordered, candy bowls are being cleared and readied for a refill, and kids are buzzing with excitement. But before you clip on your dog’s festive bandana and leash, it’s worth pausing to ask: Should You Go Trick-or-Treating with Pets in the CT Shoreline? Today, I’m taking a balanced look at the pros and cons of bringing your furry friend along for the Halloween adventure. If your dog is already spooked by Halloween decor, skip trick-or-treating altogether and read last week’s blog on how to keep them comfortable with all the ghosts and goblins gracing front yards this time of year.

Halloween can be a night full of smiles and wagging tails when it’s planned thoughtfully. The following are some of my “pros” to bringing your dogs along:

  • Family and neighborhood connections: Including your dog in the evening adds extra joy for both your family and the neighbors you visit.
  • Fun: Friendly pups in costume are often the highlight of the night for children and adults alike.
  • Photo-worthy moments: There’s no denying the cuteness of a costumed dog matching their human family. Whether it’s a superhero sidekick, spooky ghost, or pumpkin pup, the photos you take can become cherished seasonal memories. If you’re considering pet costumes, read this blog for safety tips.
  • Heartwarming tradition-building: For social, easygoing dogs, participating in trick-or-treating can become a fun annual tradition that brings everyone together while showcasing your dog’s friendly personality.

Even with the best intentions, Halloween can be overwhelming for pets. Loud noises, excited children, and constant activity can create an unpredictable environment. The following would be my “cons” when considering including pets in the festivities:

  • Stress and overstimulation: Many dogs find the sights and sounds of Halloween; from flashing lights and costumes to laughter, yelling, and strangers, Halloween can become overwhelming for even the most easy-going dog.
  • Risk of pet loss or accidents: With so many distractions and open doors, Halloween night is an especially high-risk time for lost pets. Always ensure your dog’s ID tags and microchip information are current if you do venture out.
  • Dangerous treats: Chocolate, candy wrappers, and artificial sweeteners like xylitol are toxic to dogs. Many sidewalks and driveways can end up littered with these hazards, making it easy for dogs to accidentally ingest something harmful.
  • Traffic and visibility concerns: Excited trick-or-treaters and increased vehicle traffic after dark pose an extra risk. Sturdy 6-foot leashes, a reliable harness, reflective gear, and close supervision are must-haves if you head out with your dog.

When it comes to Halloween festivities, the safest approach is to think about what your dog would truly enjoy. A calm evening at home with a special treat and some snuggle time might be heaven for one dog, while another might happily trot alongside the costumes and candy. Tune in to their body language, confidence level, and comfort around crowds. Or, find an in between and watch the festivities from the comfort of your yard or balcony instead of committing to the full on chaos of Hallows Eve.

If you decide to venture out with your dog(s) in Old Saybrook, Essex, Westbrook, or its environs, head out early and head home when your pets have had enough.

Have Your Dog Walked Early

No matter what you decide, schedule your dog(s) for a midday dog walk on October 31st so your pup gets their exercise and enrichment early. We’ll come by before the spooky, noisy rush begins. A good walk that soothes their minds and relaxes their bodies is the perfect way to prepare for a safe and stress-free Halloween.
