Does My Dog Need a Daily Walk During the Summer?

Summer on the Connecticut Shoreline brings sunny days, beach trips, and plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors. But when temperatures climb, many pet parents wonder, “Does My Dog Need a Daily Walk During the Summer?” The short answer? Most dogs still benefit from a daily walk during the summer, but the walk may need to look a little different than it does during cooler months. At Shoreline Happy Paws, we believe it’s important to adapt to the weather rather than eliminate the physical exercise and mental enrichment dogs need to thrive.

Does My Dog Need a Daily Walk During the Summer? Why Daily Walks Still Matter

A walk isn’t just an opportunity for your dog to burn energy or do their business. It’s also a chance to:

  • Explore new sights and smells
  • Practice good leash manners
  • Build confidence
  • Relieve stress
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Enjoy one-on-one time

For many dogs, a walk is one of the most enriching parts of the day.

Even if your dog has a fenced backyard, they’re often missing out on the mental stimulation that comes from exploring different environments and sniffing new scents.

Signs Your Dog Still Needs a Walk

Your dog may benefit from a daily walk if they:

  • Pace around the house
  • Frequently ask to go outside
  • Bark more than usual
  • Chew furniture, toys, or household items
  • Have bursts of “zoomies”
  • Seem restless or unable to settle
  • Gain weight despite eating the same amount
  • Become overly excited when you pick up the leash
  • Always love walks when they get them, which means that walks bring them joy no matter the weather

These behaviors don’t necessarily mean your dog is misbehaving or unhappy. Often, they’re simply asking for more opportunities to move, explore, and engage with the world.

Daily walks remain important, but summer isn’t the time to push dogs through long outings in the midday heat.

Instead, we recommend:

  • Walking early in the morning or later in the evening
  • Choosing shaded routes whenever possible
  • Shortening the distance on especially hot or humid days, but compensating with enrichment indoors so their needs are still met
  • Bringing water for longer outings
  • Checking pavement temperatures before heading out

Some days, a shorter walk with plenty of opportunities to sniff can be even more enriching than a fast-paced, longer walk.

Know When to Scale Back

The goal is to continue meeting your dog’s physical and mental needs while reducing the risk of overheating.

At Shoreline Happy Paws, your dog’s safety always comes first. During the summer months, we adjust our walks based on weather conditions and each dog’s individual needs. That may include:

  • Modifying walk time and length
  • Slowing the pace
  • Prioritizing shaded paths
  • Watching closely for signs of heat stress
  • Choosing refreshing paths with beaches or dog water fountains like those found at Bailey’s Dog Park in Clinton, CT
  • Providing fresh water once we’re back home

Our team is trained in Pet First Aid and CPR, and we know how to recognize the early signs of heat-related illness so we can act quickly if needed.

Every Dog Is Different

Age, breed, health, fitness level, and personality all influence how much activity a dog needs during the summer.

A young Labrador may still be eager for a morning adventure, while a senior Bulldog may prefer a shorter stroll followed by a nap in the air conditioning.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, which is why we tailor every walk to the individual dog. It’s also why we recommend discussing your dog’s fitness plan with your veterinarian and keeping us informed of their recommendations.

Does My Dog Need a Daily Walk During the Summer?

For most dogs, the answer is yes, but it should be a walk that respects the weather, your dog’s fitness levels, and their overall wellbeing.

With thoughtful planning, cooler walking times, and a focus on safety, dogs on the Connecticut Shoreline can continue enjoying the exercise, enrichment, and routine they love all summer long. These products, which we highlighted a few blogs back, are also very helpful this time of year.
