What Happens During a Professional Cat Sitting Visit?

What exactly happens when a professional cat sitter comes to your home to care for your cat? Is it just a matter of putting food in a bowl, scooping the litter box, and heading out? Not at Shoreline Happy Paws! Our in-home cat sitting visits are designed to keep your cat comfortable, maintain their familiar routine, and make sure their environment stays clean, safe, and welcoming while you’re away. Here’s a closer look at what happens during a professional cat sitting visit.

What Happens During A Professional Cat Sitting Visit1. Mealtime Is More Than Filling a Bowl

Cats can be particular about their meals, and we respect that!

During each visit, we follow your feeding instructions, including portion sizes, meal schedules, and any special preparation requirements.

We also take care of the cleanup:

  • Wash food bowls so old food doesn’t build up.
  • Refresh water bowls with clean drinking water.
  • Tidy the feeding area, including spills and scattered kibble.
  • Rinse empty wet food cans with hot, soapy water before placing them in the recycling, when appropriate for your household.

Why does this matter? Because nobody wants to return from vacation to a collection of smelly food cans, crusty bowls, or a sticky feeding station.

We all know cats can be very persnickety about their water, so we like to ensure they get fresh, clean water during every visit. We can also rinse out and top off water fountains, keeping cats as hydrated as they are happy.

Litter box maintenance is one of the most important parts of professional cat sitting.

We scoop waste, dispose of it according to your household instructions, and tidy up litter tracked outside the box.

We also pay attention to what’s happening inside the litter box.

Changes in urine output, stool consistency, or bathroom habits can sometimes signal that something isn’t right. Because we’re paying attention during each visit, we can alert you to anything unusual.

We’re not veterinarians, but we know that noticing changes early matters.

A clean litter box isn’t just about odor control. It’s about comfort, hygiene, and keeping an eye on your cat’s well-being.

Once we handle the essentials, it’s time for the fun stuff!

For playful cats, that might mean chasing a wand toy, batting around a favorite mouse, or enjoying a little interactive play.

For affectionate cats, it might mean brushing, chin scratches, lap time, or simply sitting together.

And for shy cats? Sometimes the best care is giving them space, speaking softly, and allowing them to approach when they’re ready.

We don’t force interaction or expect every cat to be a social butterfly.

Our goal is to provide companionship and enrichment in ways that feel good to your individual cat.

Cats notice changes in their environment, and a tidy, familiar space helps preserve their routine.

Depending on your instructions and the visit, we may straighten up pet areas, clean minor food or litter messes, refresh bedding, and check that favorite resting spots are comfortable.

We also keep an eye out for potential hazards, such as spills, damaged toys, or something that looks out of place.

It’s the kind of attention to detail that keeps our cat sitting clients coming back year after year.

Every visit is also an opportunity to observe how your cat is doing.

Are they eating normally? Moving comfortably? Acting like their usual curious, chatty, or delightfully judgmental self?

We pay attention to their behavior, appetite, energy, and general appearance so we can communicate anything that seems unusual.

And because you deserve peace of mind while traveling, we provide real-time visit updates, photos, and notes through our pet care app.

With Shoreline Happy Paws’ cat sitting services, you get to enjoy your trip knowing someone is paying attention to the details and spoiling your favorite feline back home.
