Summer on Connecticut’s shoreline is an excellent time for you and your new puppy to experience new adventures. But, it’s also a time that brings unique risks. Keeping your puppy safe, happy, and healthy during the warm months, from parasite prevention to water safety, sets the tone for many great summers to come. Here are my top 4 ways to keep your puppy safe in the CT Shoreline this summer!

The CT Shoreline’s warm, humid climate is prime territory for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, all of which can transmit serious diseases to your puppy. Fleas and ticks can cause skin irritation and transmit illnesses like Lyme disease, while mosquitoes can carry heartworm, a potentially fatal parasite. Lyme disease was named in our area, making it a real danger for area residents – human and otherwise.

To keep pests at bay, start with these important steps:

  • Start Preventatives ASAP: Most flea and tick preventatives are safe for puppies starting at 6–8 weeks old, but always check the product label and consult your veterinarian for the best option based on your puppy’s age and weight
  • Monthly Medications: Many products offer monthly protection against fleas, ticks, and even heartworm; these are practical solutions because they only require application or administration once a month
  • Keep Your Home and Yard Clean: Regularly vacuum and wash your puppy’s bedding, and keep your yard tidy to reduce flea tick habitats; consider a product like Wondercide Indoor Pest Control that uses essential oils to keep pests at bay between bedding washes
  • Annual Vet Visits: Make sure your puppy is tested for heartworm and stays up-to-date on parasite prevention

As an extra layer of protection, consider spraying your puppy’s paws/legs and your pant legs/sneakers with repellent before and during hikes to keep fleas and ticks from hitching a ride home.

We’ve discussed the impact of extreme heat on dogs in a previous blog post. Puppies are especially vulnerable to high temperatures and hot surfaces. For this reason, I recommend you take the following precautions:

  • Walk Early or Late: Avoid walking your puppy during the hottest parts of the day. Early mornings and evenings are safest
  • Test Pavement: Place the top your hand on the pavement for a few seconds; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your puppy’s paws
  • Use Paw Protection: Consider paw wax, balms, or booties to shield sensitive pads from hot surfaces; we like to use paw protection as a year-round pampering tool for dog paws because they are exposed to so many rough surfaces
  • Hydration and Shade: Always provide fresh water and access to shade. Watch for signs of overheating: excessive panting, drooling, weakness, or collapse
  • Never Leave in Cars: Even a few minutes in a parked car can be deadly!

Vaccinations are a cornerstone of your puppy’s health, protecting against deadly diseases common in Connecticut.

  • Start On Time: Puppies should begin their vaccination series at 6–8 weeks old, with boosters every 2–4 weeks until about 16 weeks; here’s a breakdown of a typical vaccination schedule
  • Core Vaccines: These include DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus), rabies, and others as recommended by your vet
  • Lifestyle Vaccines: Depending on your activities (like hiking or swimming in lakes), your vet may recommend vaccines for Lyme disease or leptospirosis; discuss these with your CT Shoreline vet because these illnesses are a real threat in our area

Connecticut’s lakes and ponds can experience harmful blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms, especially in summer. To keep your puppy safe, follow these steps:

  • Recognize Algae Blooms: Water may look cloudy, green, or like pea soup, sometimes with scum or foam on the surface
  • Health Risks: Algae blooms can release toxins harmful to both pets and people. Dogs are especially at risk if they swim in or drink contaminated water
  • When in Doubt, Stay Out: If you see signs of an algae bloom, avoid letting your puppy swim or drink from the water. Always choose safe, clean locations for water play
  • Keep them from drinking untested water: Provide fresh, bottled water so your puppy doesn’t get thirsty and drink risky water; if they have a hard time not ingesting the water, it’s smart to get them out
  • Rinse After Swimming: If your puppy swims in any natural water, rinse them off as soon as possible to remove potential contaminants

The above four dangers land many puppies at the vet this time of year. For this reason, we urge you to consider the following:

  • Schedule an early summer vet check to ensure your puppy is healthy and ready for outdoor fun
  • Supervise your puppy at all times, especially near water or in unfamiliar environments
  • Keep emergency contact numbers handy, including your preferred vet, pet poison control, and the nearest emergency animal hospital

With these precautions, you and your puppy can enjoy a safe, fun-filled summer in the Connecticut Shoreline!
