National Dog Week: How Dogs Enhance Our Health and Happiness

National Dog Week is a special time to celebrate the incredible bond between humans and dogs. During this week, celebrated annually during the last full week of September, we recognize how sharing our lives with these loyal companions can significantly improve our well-being. In honor of National Dog Week (9/21/25 to 9/27/25), today, we’re discussing how dogs enhance our health and happiness! Dogs do much more than bring joy and companionship; they enhance physical fitness, boost brain health, and increase overall life satisfaction in powerful ways.

One of the most notable benefits of dog ownership is their positive impact on our physical fitness. Dogs require regular exercise, typically daily dog walks and one-on-one playtime, which naturally motivates dog parents to stay active.

Studies show that over 60% of dog owners meet recommended weekly physical activity levels, which is associated with better cardiovascular health, healthy weight maintenance, and stronger muscles and joints. Dog companionship has even been associated with longer life expectancy. The combined benefits of regular exercise, reduced stress, social connection, and emotional well-being contribute to a healthier, extended lifespan.

Regular activity with a dog can reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic conditions. Moreover, physical exercise with dogs improves sleep quality, leading to deeper, more restful nights and increased daytime energy. And, I’m sure there are studies that state that humans (mostly women) sleep better with a dog by their side!

How Dogs Enhance Our Mental Fitness

In addition to decreasing cortisol (stress hormone) levels, petting or cuddling a dog releases serotonin and dopamine in the brain, chemicals that promote relaxation and happiness. This emotional support from dogs helps ease loneliness and combats depression.

Dog ownership has been linked to a lower perception of social isolation because dogs facilitate social interactions, such as talking to other dog owners during walks, which further supports mental wellness. Additionally, for people managing long-term neurological conditions such as dementia, dogs provide comfort, reduce distress, and improve quality of life.

Beyond adults, children also experience enhanced physical and emotional health by sharing their lives with a dog. Children with dogs tend to be more active, playing and exercising regularly. Exposure to pets can strengthen immune systems and decrease allergy risks. Dogs also offer invaluable emotional support to kids, fostering resilience and empathy.
