If you’re considering professional dog walking services for the first time, you may be wondering what the experience looks like for both you and your dog. At Shoreline Happy Paws, we believe successful dog walks begin long before we ever pick up a leash. Our goal is to make life easier for pet parents while ensuring every dog receives safe, thoughtful, and individualized care. Here’s what to expect from your first dog walk with Shoreline Happy Paws.
Step 1: The New Client Consultation
At Shoreline Happy Paws, every new client relationship starts with a consultation.
Our initial consultation (aka new client consultation or meeting) allows us to get to know you, your dog, and your household before services begin. During the consultation, we’ll discuss your dog’s routine, personality, preferences, exercise needs, medical concerns, training history, and any specific instructions you’d like us to follow.
This is also an opportunity for your dog to meet us in a relaxed environment and begin building familiarity before their first scheduled walk. At this time, we can troubleshoot equipment, discuss leash and harness options, and answer any questions you can have.
The more we know about your pet, the better equipped we are to provide care that helps them feel comfortable, safe, and understood.
Step 2: Building a Schedule That Works for You
After the consultation, we’ll work with you to establish a dog walking schedule that supports both your lifestyle and your dog’s needs.
Together, we’ll determine:
- The ideal visit frequency
- Preferred time blocks
- Walk duration (or hikes for dogs that need more exercise and enrichment)
- Any feeding, medication, or special care requests
Whether your dog benefits from daily walks, several visits per week, or a recurring routine while you’re at work, we’ll help create a schedule that makes life easier for your entire pet family.
Step 3: Your Dog’s Walk
When we arrive, we don’t immediately assume every dog wants the same interaction.
Instead, we take time to observe each dog’s body language and emotional state. Some dogs greet us enthusiastically at the door, while others prefer a slower introduction. We believe in allowing dogs to guide interactions and respecting their comfort levels.
Throughout our visits, we practice positive reinforcement and what many behavior professionals call “care with consent”; paying attention to how dogs respond and ensuring they feel comfortable with our handling and interactions.
During the walk, we’ll provide exercise, enrichment, opportunities to sniff and explore, and plenty of positive engagement tailored to your dog’s individual needs.
Step 4: Making Sure Your Dog Is Comfortable Before We Leave
The visit doesn’t end when the walk is over.
Before departing, we’ll:
- Refresh water bowls
- Provide treats if approved
- Feed meals if requested
- Crate or place the dogs in a gated area if that’s where they stay until you get home
- Ensure your dog is settled and comfortable
- Check that gates and doors are secure
We take the time to make sure your dog’s needs are met and that their environment is safe before we leave. Our goal is for your pet to feel content, comfortable, and relaxed until the next visit. And, to give you peace of mind knowing your pet and home are secure until your return.
Step 5: Instant Updates Through Our Smartphone App
One of our clients’ favorite features is receiving updates through our GPS-enabled smartphone app.
After each visit, you’ll receive:
- Visit notes
- Photos
- Details about your dog’s behavior and activities
This transparency allows you to stay connected and informed no matter where you are, which is a welcome treat during long workdays.
What to Expect from Your First Dog Walk with Shoreline Happy Paws
At Shoreline Happy Paws, dog walking is much more than simply taking dogs outside.
Our team is trained to recognize signs of illness, injury, stress, and behavioral concerns. We are Pet First Aid and CPR trained and prepared to respond appropriately if an emergency occurs.
Equally important, we operate as a team. If a caregiver experiences an illness, family emergency, accident, or scheduling conflict, we have trained backup support available to ensure your services continue without interruption.
That means greater reliability, greater peace of mind, and a higher level of care for both you and your dog.
From the initial consultation to every walk that follows, our mission is simple: keep your dog safe, fulfilled, and happy while making life easier for the people who love them.
