Last week, as temperatures plummeted across the CT Shoreline area, our dedicated team at Shoreline Happy Paws rose to the challenge, demonstrating unwavering commitment to the pets in our care. I’m proud to celebrate the extraordinary efforts of our pet care professionals who went above and beyond to ensure the safety, comfort, and happiness of our furry friends during these frigid conditions. Today, I’m highlighting the consistency of Shoreline Happy Paws’ commitment to pet care excellence – no matter what Mother Nature sends our way!

Less Than Ideal Dog Walking Conditions
During last week’s “quick-hitting winter storm,” our team faced icy roads and sidewalks, biting winds, and snow-covered yards, but their passion for pet care never wavered. They bundled up, donned extra layers, and ventured out to provide essential care and companionship to the pets in our care.
Inclement Weather Adjustments
During these extreme weather events, we at Shoreline Happy Paws prioritize the well-being of both pets and our team members. This commitment sometimes requires us to make adjustments to our usual routines. During periods of severe cold, we may need to modify visit times and adjust the length of walks, hikes, and other outdoor activities to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort.
When inclement weather strikes, I consider the following:
- Safety First: I assess the temperature and wind chill to determine safe outdoor exposure times for pets and people
- Comfort is Key: I ask my team to ensure pets are comfortable and not showing signs of distress from the cold
- Enrichment Focus: When outdoor time is limited, our team emphasizes indoor enrichment activities to keep pets mentally stimulated and physically active indoors
- Personalized Care: We take into account each pet’s breed, size, and coat thickness when making decisions about outdoor time
Inclement Weather Training
Our team is trained to recognize signs of cold stress in pets and takes proactive measures to prevent issues like frostbite or hypothermia. We’re vigilant about protecting ears, noses, and sensitive paw pads from the elements. Once indoors, we wipe paws thoroughly after outdoor excursions to prevent skin irritation and potential ingestion of potentially toxic de-icing chemicals.
Inclement Weather Tasks for Pet Parents
During extreme cold snaps, we may ask our clients to do the following:
- Keep an eye on your indoor temperature to ensure your pets remain comfortable while you’re away
- Remove snow and ice from walkways, driveways, etc.
- Use pet-safe ice melt on entryways, stairs, sidewalks, and driveways
- Consider winter gear for pets that are sensitive to the elements
- Provide extra blankets and cozy spots for pets to curl up
- Monitor pets closely for any signs of discomfort or illness and contact us if you have any concerns
- Contact us if you lose power, have pipes burst, etc. so that we can plan our visits accordingly
